Technology and
Second Language Learning
Technology has always been an important part of CARLA's work and is now included as part of all of CARLA's initiatives. However, there are technology-specific projects and other related activities, including the CARLA website!
Technology Summer Institutes
Please see the CARLA Summer Institute pages for information on the current summer's insitutes:
- "Tranforming the Teaching of Language Online" (TTLO) is a unique online professional development program, offered completely online as a 4-week, intensive institute that gives teacher participants the experience of taking an online course along with guidelines and best practices for developing and delivering an online language course. It also looks at online language pedagogy and the use of tech tools for the 3 modes of communication, materials creation, and assessment and feedback. Participants also have the opportunity to create an ePortfolio for themselves in preparation for doing the same with students.
- "Building on Effective Uses of Technology in Second Language Teaching" encourages teachers to share what they have learned about tech use through short presentations and walk-throughs with plenty of time to try things out and create sample activities. Participants loved sharing what worked well for them, and gained many new ideas to try with their classes, whether F2F or online. Formerly F2F, then hybrid, and now completely online.
- "Using the Web for Communicative Language Learning" - a completely online, 5-week long look at social media, professional networking on the web, and tech tools for the 3 communicative modes.
Teaching Languages Online (TLO) Project
This project focused on the training of language teachers to teach online, starting with a survey for a needs assessment, collecting resources in an online bibliography, and created an intensive summer teacher development program for teaching languages online (TTLO).

Technology Project Resources
- The CARLA Tech Wiki contains the web resources used during the CARLA Technology summer institute for many years up to 2020. There are pages of links and information about our favorite tech tools that you will find very useful.
- The LT4 Technology Project created online tech integration modules for some basics of incorporating technology in language teaching and learning. These modules were started as part of the CoBaLTT project and were developed as part of the 2006-2010 grant cycle. There is still some useful basic technology use information - check out the brain-based module.
- A survey of tech use gave a focus to the early technology summer institutes.

CARLA Summer Institutes for Language Teachers
Each summer CARLA offers a wide array of professional development opportunities for K-16 language teachers including institutes focused on using technology in second language teaching, using the web for language learning, and teaching language online.
