Exercise 6: Requests

Situation 1: Sample Dialogue 2

In this dialogue, Roommate B does not make an explicit request.  She only makes a hint, but Roommate A picks up on what B intends. (The parts in red are the core request statement.  The parts in blue are important supporting strategies.)

ルームメイトA: もうそろそろ終わりにしてさ、休憩したら？  Mou sorosoro owarini shitesa, kyuukei shitara?  ‘Why don’t you stop now and take a break?’

ルームメイトB: 休憩したいのはやまやまなんだけどさ、まだぜんぜん宿題終わらなくって。  Kyuukei shitai nowa yamayama nanda kedosa, mada zenzen shukudai owara nakutte.  ‘I wish I could do that, but I have a whole lot of homework left.’

ルームメイトA: そんな大変なんだ。  Sonna taihen nanda.  ‘Is it that hard?’

ルームメイトB: うん。まだまだかかりそう。  Un, madamada kakarisou.  ‘Yeah.  It’ll take me forever.’

ルームメイトA: ふーん。いつ寝られるの？  Fuun.  Itsu nerareruno?  ‘Really?  When can you go to bed?’

ルームメイトB: えー、わかんない。もしかしたら徹夜かもしれない。  Ee, wakannai.  Moshika shitara tetsuya kamo shirenai.  ‘Well, I don’t know.  Maybe I’ll have to stay up all night.’

ルームメイトA: えー、そんなに宿題あるんだ。  Ee, sonnani shukudai arunda.  ‘Wow, you have that much homework?’

ルームメイトB: そうなの。あの、それでさ、  Sounano.  Ano, soredesa,  ‘Yeah, and so,’

ルームメイトA: うん。  Un.  ‘Yeah,’

ルームメイトB: あの、そのテレビの音、さっきからちょっと気になってたんだよね。  Ano, sono terebino oto, sakki kara chotto kini nattetan dayone.   ‘Well, that TV has been bothering me a bit.’

ルームメイトA: あ、そうなんだ、ごめん、ごめん。下げるよ。ごめんね。  A, sou nanda, gomen, gomen.  Sageruyo.  Gomenne.  ‘Oh, really?  I’ll turn it down.  I’m sorry.’

ルームメイトB: あ、ほんと？ごめんね。  A, honto?  Gomenne.  ‘Great, thanks.’

ルームメイトA: ううん。  Uun.  ‘Not at all.’

ルームメイトB: うん、ありがとう、助かる。  Un, arigatou, tasukaru.  ‘Thanks, that’s a lifesaver.’

ルームメイトA: うん、気づかなかったよ。ごめん、ごめん。  Un, kidukanakkattayo.  Gomen, gomen.  ‘I’m sorry I didn’t notice.’
