Situation 2: Sample Dialogue

友達Ａ：ねえ、とも、ちょっとお願いがあるんだけどさ。  Nee, Tomo, chotto onegaiga arun dakedosa.  ‘Hey, Tomo.  I have a favor to ask of you.’

友達B：えー、なに。  Ee, nani?  ‘What is it?’

友達Ａ：あのさ、テスト終わったら旅行に行こうかなと思ってて、で、だれも車もってなくて。  Anosa, tesuto owattara ryokouni ikoukanato omottete, de, daremo kuruma motte nakute.  ‘We are thinking of going on a trip after the exams, but nobody has a car.’

友達B：うん。  Un.  ‘Yeah.’

友達Ａ：たった一週間なんだけど、ほんと一週間なんだけど、車、ちょっと貸してほしいんだけど。  Tatta isshuukan nanda kedo, honto isshuukan nanda kedo, kuruma, chotto kashite hoshiin dakedo.  ‘Can you just lend us your car for a little while - for only a week, really, just a week?’

友達B：おれ、行かないのに？  Ore, ikanainoni?  ‘Even though I’m not going?’

友達Ａ：え、だから、ほんと、一週間で、で、帰ってきたらご飯おごるし、飲みにも行こうよ。  E, dakara, honto, isshuukande, de, kaette kitara gohan ogorushi, noninimo ikouyo.  ‘Well, I mean, really, it’s gonna be just a week, and we’ll treat you to dinner, and take you for drink too when we come back’

友達B：まじで？そっか。  Majide?  Sokka.  ‘Are you serious?  Well.’

友達Ａ：お願い、ほんと、お願い、ねえ。  Onegai, honto, onegai, nee.  ‘Please.  Really, please.’

友達B：わかったよ。いいよ、使って。  Wakattayo.  Iiyo, tsukatte.  ‘All right.  You can use it then.’

友達Ａ：ほんと？ありがとう。うれしい。みんな喜ぶよ。ほんと、一週間で返すから。ありがとう、とも。  Honto?  Arigatou.  Ureshii.  Minna yorokobuyo.  Honto, isshuukande kaesu kara.  ‘Really?  Thanks.  I’m so glad. Everyone is gonna be happy too.  We’ll return it in a week, really.’

友達B：事故るなよ。  Jikorunayo.  ‘Don’t get involved in an accident.’
