Exercise 2: Refusals

Situation 2: Dialogue 1

The parts in red are the refusal expressions you’ve been asked to write down.  The parts in blue are other important supporting strategies that will be covered more fully later in the unit.

友達A: ねえ、みか、ちょっとお金貸してもらえないかな、今日。  Nee, Mika, chotto okane kashite moraenaikana, kyou.  ‘Hey, Mika, can  you lend me some money today?’

友達B: えー、いくら？  Ee, ikura?  ‘What?  How much?’

友達A: あの、3000円なんだけど。  Ano, sanzen en nandakedo.  ‘Well, 3000 yen.’

友達B: うーん、今月はね、私もちょっと厳しいの。  Uun, kongetsuwane,   watashimo chotto kibishiino.  ‘Well, my budget is a little tight this month, too.’

友達A:うーん、そこをなんとかならないかな。  Uun, sokowo nantoka naranaikana.  ‘Well, can you help me at all somehow?’

友達B: えー、でも先月の2000円もまだ返してくれてないじゃない。  Ee, demo sengetsuno nisen enmo mada kaeshite kurete nai janai.  ‘Well, but you haven’t paid the 2000 yen back from last month yet, either.’

友達A:うん、そうだったね。来週、ほら、あの、お給料入るから、全部一緒に払えるから。だめかな。  Un, sou dattane.  Raishuu, hora, ano, okyuuryou hairu kara, zenbu isshoni haraeru kara.  Dame kana?  ‘You are right.  Well, I’ll get paid next week, so I can pay everything back at that time.’

友達B: うーん、ともこさんには聞いてみた？  Uun, Tomoko-sanniwa kite mita?  ‘Well, did you ask Tomoko?’

友達A: あー、そうだね、聞いてみるよ。  Aa, soudane, kiite miruyo.  ‘Ah, that’s right.  I’ll ask her.’

友達B: うん、その方が嬉しいな。  Un, sono houga ureshiina.  ‘Yeah, that’ll be better.’

友達A:うん、わかった。じゃあ。  Un, wakatta.  Jaa.  ‘All right.  See you, then.’

友達B: ごめんね。  Gomenne.  ‘I’m sorry,’

友達A:いいよ、いいよ、気にしないで。  Iiyo, iiyo, kini shinaide.  ‘That’s OK.  Never mind.’
