Note
that the above dialogues are just samples, and there are various other ways to
respond to compliments that are also appropriate.  We encourage you to observe the language of Japanese speakers
and experiment in real-life communication using the strategies you learned
in these exercises.  Observe also how people react to you when you
give and respond to compliments.   
  
    Remember that an important strategy for learning speech acts can
      be to gather data, almost like a
        mini-researcher.  You can indicate to
      your interlocutors that you are not sure how to perform a given speech act such
      as complimenting and ask them for their opinion.  You can also check with them as to whether
      your response to the speech act is appropriate in that situation.
