Unit 3: Using Audio, Part A

Before you watch:

This unit is about using audio recordings in teaching. What kinds of audio recordings have you used in your teaching? What did you do with those audio recordings? What other kinds of audio recorded material can you imagine using?

What linguistic features of songs might we usefully focus on in a language class?

After you watch:

How is listening similar to reading? How are these two skills different? What do these similarities and differences mean for the way we choose materials and design activities?

Do you agree with Bill that listening is “the most stressful” of the four skills? How can we design listening tasks to help learners deal better with stress?

Before you watch the next segment:

Try to fill in the missing words in the text of “My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose” (a new window will open).
What made it easy or difficult?
