Example 4: Wall of the World by Dawn Breutzman

Presentational Task

Materials needed:

Description of the task:

Instructions to the students:

  • You are going to create a picture of the world with you, your partner, and people all over the world on the sheet I'm handing out..
  • In the circle labeled "Me", draw 6 or more pictures to show things that are special about you.
  • In the circle labeled "(partner's name) and I", draw 6 or more pictures to show things that are the same and different about you and your partner. You will use information from your Venn diagram. Put things that are different from you under "Different", and things that are the same as you under "Same".
  • In the circle labeled "People all over the world", draw 6 or more pictures to show things that may be the same and different about people all over the world. Put things that may be different from you under "Different", and things that may be the same as you under "Same". You may decorate the remainder any way you like.
  • When you are finished, you will use your poster to tell the class in English about yourself, and how you are the same and different from your partner and people all over the world. You will choose one piece of information from each circle to share with the class.

Students will work individually to complete a poster that will aid them in the presentational task. They will complete a graphic representation of the world, comparing themselves with their interpersonal task partner, and people all over the world as represented in the text. Work on the poster will take place in class while I take one pair at a time aside to conduct the interpersonal task.

An additional 30 minutes will be given on the third day for additions or adjustments that need to be made. Once the posters have been completed, I will provide the whole group with feedback on the interpersonal task.

I will review comparing and contrasting, and use of the 1st & 3rd person singular by modeling my own poster and presentation. This will give students a chance to review the language and functions necessary for their presentations as well as being made aware of what is expected of them. Although I will provide numerous examples of similarities and differences from my own poster, students will be required to share just one piece of information from each circle. At this time, I will have students identify which comparisons they will share with the class, and will give them each a chance to practice with me.

Presentations will take place in the fourth week. Each student will have 1-2 minutes to present his/her information to the class. I will score the posters and presentations using a two-part rubric. The rubric and non-negotiables, which will be written in the students' L1, will be handed out and read aloud in class before work on the posters begins. Upon completion of the presentations I will allow time for questions /comments and encourage the students to circulate and look at each other's posters. We will then regroup and I will give feedback to the class.
