Using the Web for Communicative Language Learning

Technology is constantly changing making it challenging to keep abreast of all the new and exciting ways to use it in the classroom meaningfully. Participants in this online institute will work together to develop their personal learning networks and create lessons and activities that use technology to help students develop their communication skills in each of the three modes described in the National Standards (interpretive, interpersonal, presentational).
In this five-week course, participants will discover ways to use online tools to promote student language comprehension and production by motivating their participation and collaboration in the target language. Participants will also discuss how to successfully implement “flipped” lessons, where web-based activities are designed to enhance and maximize learning in the classroom.

After this institute, you will be able to:
- Expand your Personal Learning Network with online resources;
- Explore various tools and determine their advantages and disadvantages for different tasks;
- Effectively integrate technology to create activities targeting each of the three modes of communication; and
- Consider pedagogical and practical aspects of applying the “flipped” learning model to language instruction.
Instructor
Florencia Henshaw has a Ph.D.in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she is now the Director of Advanced Spanish. She has designed eight online courses and has extensive experience with technology-enhanced second language and heritage language instruction.
Target Audience
This institute is designed for foreign language and ESL teachers at the middle school through the postsecondary level who are interested in incorporating online applications into their face-to-face, hybrid, or online classes.
*IMPORTANT NOTES FOR THIS ASYNCHRONOUS ONLINE INSTITUTE:
- This institute is almost entirely asynchronous (not real time) with bi-weekly due dates. For the most part, you will work on activities according to your own schedule during the week, but you must meet the twice-weekly due dates.
- You must keep up with assignments each week as they build on each other. Many assignments involve facilitation from the instructor and/or collaboration with other participants.
- This institute includes a couple of synchronous activities—one with a partner or small group—dates/times will be set at the beginning of the course.
- This institute will require a minimum of six hours of work per week.
