Building on Effective Uses of Technology in Second Language Teaching

Synchronous* 1-week online summer institute
Using technology to promote students’ engagement and foster the ability to communicate in the target language is at the heart of this summer institute. Drawing on personal experience, participants will share their successes and challenges in using technology tools to teach language remotely, online, or in a hybrid environment. Participants will then work as an online learning community to refine their tech skills and come away with new ideas for technology integration.
Prior to the start of the institute, participants will submit a description of a successful activity or tip that uses technology that has worked well to meet a specific pedagogical need. This activity or tip will be presented in a brief “lightning talk” during the institute. The lightning talk will be expanded into a 30-min “walk-through” that shows how an activity was created or incorporated, and attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions. In addition, there will be special sessions dedicated to finding solutions to the top challenges that participants have experienced.
The institute provides ample opportunity for participants to develop technology-enriched activities based on the lightning talks and walk-through sessions. Participants should expect to participate actively in lively presentations and discussions with colleagues and instructors, as well as in developing and testing innovative activities that meet specific contexts and needs, all through a dynamic new institute format!

After this institute, you will be able to:
- Assess affordances and constraints of technology tools for foreign language instruction;
- Evaluate and adapt technology solutions for use in your own teaching context;
- Critique and compare uses of technology for language teaching and learning;
- Identify and compile sustainable and effective technology-facilitated activities; and
- Apply strategies to address common challenges to teaching in technological environments.
Instructors
Adolfo Carrillo Cabello is the Professional Development Coordinator of the CLA Language Center at the University of Minnesota. He has presented his research on intercultural communicative competence, online learning, materials development, and CALL at national and international conferences.
Marlene Johnshoy is the Online Education Program Director and Web Manager for the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition. She has offered professional development on many aspects of online and technology-enhanced language teaching and learning.
Beth Kautz is the Interim Director of the Language Center in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota. She has developed, taught, and supervised intermediate-level German curricular units integrating content-based instruction, telecollaboration, multiliteracies pedagogy, and sustainability education.
Target Audience
This institute is designed for foreign language teachers at the middle school through the postsecondary level who have experience with using technology in their language teaching. It is not for the technology novice.
*IMPORTANT NOTES FOR THIS SYNCHRONOUS ONLINE INSTITUTE:
- This 1-week synchronous online institute will run from 9 am–4 pm (Central Time). The schedule includes many synchronous (real-time) presentations, group/partner work, and activities throughout the day. It also includes some off-screen time for independent work and a break for lunch each day.
- You must be available to participate for the entire day Monday–Friday as all activities build on each other.
- Make sure you can meet the tech requirements for this institute.
