This institute has been specifically designed for foreign language teachers who want to familiarize themselves with and implement Content-Based Instruction (CBI) in the second language classroom.
During this institute, teachers will learn how to create CBI materials and tasks using varied academic and cultural content to enhance students' language proficiency and content learning. Participants will also learn how to expand their own existing curricula by familiarizing themselves with a framework for Integrating Content, Language, and Literacy (Cammarata, 2016) and utilizing the Content-Based Language Teaching with Technology
(CoBaLTT) online resources.

After this institute, you will be able to:
- Identify the key theoretical principles that underlie content-based instruction (CBI);
- Understand issues related to the integration of language, content, and literacy within the context of CBI curriculum development;
- Describe how the World Readiness Standards relate to CBI;
- Identify well-adapted assessment strategies and tools for CBI; and
- Develop plans for well-integrated language and content instructional modules by applying newly acquired CBI planning skills and strategies.
Instructor
Laurent Cammarata is a Professor in Education at the Faculté Saint-Jean, University of Alberta, Canada. His work focuses on the implementation of meaning-based approaches to curriculum design. His publications have appeared in well-respected scientific venues and have received many academic accolades such as the 2013 Paul Pimsleur Award for Research in Foreign Language Education. He is the editor of two volumes on the topic, Content-Based Foreign Language Teaching: Curriculum and Pedagogy for Developing Advanced Thinking and Literacy Skills (2016) and Teacher Development for Immersion and Content-Based Instruction (2020), and the current co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Immersion and Content-Based Language Education.
Target Audience
Middle school to postsecondary foreign language teachers and teacher educators. The institute is not intended for ESL or immersion teachers.
*IMPORTANT NOTES FOR THIS SYNCHRONOUS ONLINE INSTITUTE:
- This 1-week synchronous online institute will run from 9 am–4 pm (Central Time). The schedule includes many synchronous (real-time) presentations, group/partner work, and activities throughout the day. It also includes some off-screen time for independent work and a break for lunch each day.
- You must be available to participate for the entire day Monday–Friday as all activities build on each other.
