2022 CARLA Summer Institute Program
for Language Teachers

The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota has provided high-quality professional development for language teachers for over two decades. Launched in 1996, this internationally known program reflects CARLA's commitment to link research and theory with practical applications for the classroom. Each institute is highly interactive and includes discussion, hands-on activities, and networking. In 2022, CARLA will offer online (synchronous and asynchronous) institutes and face-to-face institutes on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis.

CARLA Summer Institute participants—more than 7,000 to date—have come from every state and from countries all over the world. They have included foreign/world language, ESL/EFL, heritage language, and immersion educators at all levels of instruction, as well as program administrators, curriculum specialists, and language teacher educators.

Registration is now open for the 27th annual CARLA Summer Institute Program. Many institutes will fill up quickly, so register soon!

This interactive workshop is designed to help language educators create and implement web-based activities that will help their learners develop their interpretive communication skills. After discussing some key aspects of interpretive reading and listening, as well as general strategies to select the right texts, the presenter will focus on technology-enhanced ideas for every phase of an interpretive lesson: before, during, and after engaging with the text. Examples of activities for novice, intermediate, and advanced learners will be provided.

Instructor:
Florencia Henshaw, Director of Advanced Spanish, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Integrating Social Justice Instruction and Proficiency Development in the Advanced-Level Language Classroom

Saturday, March 26, 2022
9:00 a.m.– 12:00 p.m. (Central Time)
Online via Zoom
Cost: $30 Register online with a credit card!

How can we focus in our classrooms on teaching for social justice and on proficiency development at the same time? In this interactive workshop, participants will deepen their understanding of the compatibility of social justice and proficiency-oriented approaches to foreign language teaching. After reviewing examples developed by the presenter, participants will practice adapting course units to align with both approaches simultaneously. They will also explore assessments and activities that support students’ growth as language users and as engaged members of their local and global communities.

The ACTFL proficiency guidelines, “5 Cs” of the World Readiness Standards, and principles of backward design will provide a framework for the workshop. Examples presented will be in Arabic, but teachers of all languages are invited to attend.

Instructor
Katrien Vanpee,
Director of Arabic Language Instruction, University of Minnesota

8:00 a.m.-4:45 p.m.
(Central Time)

The Midwest Association for Language Learning Technology (MWALLT) will hold its 2022 virtual conference on Saturday, February 5th. Presentations will be delivered entirely via Zoom from one of four hosting institutions (Kansas State University, University of Iowa, University of Michigan, Northwestern University).

Conference sessions relate to the teaching of languages and cultures through the integration of technology, with a focus on practice rather than on research. The goal is to provide practical information about emerging technologies and approaches that can be easily implemented in the language classroom.

The conference features two session types:

  • 15-minute presentations that share favorite online activities/tech tips
  • 30-minute exploration of tools, tips, or strategies that include examples and student feedback

CARLA Program Updates

Language Program Direction

CARLA’s Language Program Direction project is focused on developing resources to equip new and aspiring postsecondary language program directors (LPDs) with the knowledge and skills necessary to support their daily work. The job of the LPD typically requires a wide range of knowledge and skills related to curriculum design, assessment, program evaluation, materials development, teacher supervision and professionalization, scheduling, and troubleshooting. Many LPDs are also active scholars and serve as mentors to graduate students.

Language Program Direction Interactive Modules

To support the complex work of LPDs, a team of experts is creating a series of seven interactive professional development modules, each addressing a different topic related to directing lower-level language programs in postsecondary language departments:

Modules 1, 2, and 7 are available online. Module 3 is expected to be posted soon; other modules will be posted throughout 2022.

CARLA Resources

CARLA's Foreign Language Literacies project provides resources for secondary and postsecondary educators seeking to apply multiliteracies pedagogy and engage students with target language texts. Links to online target language text resources are included for Arabic, Chinese, Classics, French, German, Hindi, Indigenous Languages, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Teachers of any language are invited to suggest target language texts to add to the repository.

The project's bibliography was recently updated to include literacies scholarship published in the past two years in the following thematic areas: general resources; curriculum and instruction; student learning outcomes, perspectives, and experiences; and teacher understandings and applications of multiliteracies pedagogy.
